remember all the talk about the Goddess energy?

It seems like 10-12 years ago we were all heaing about Goddess energy, YIN energy. In the YIN/YANG diagram, Yin is the black lower portion equaling feminine energy. This is about energy, not gender. Ying energy was about collaboration, cooperation, being rather than YANG energy which was doing.

Here’s a thought I have been mulling over….we cannot expect modern day to replicate ancient symbols anciently. We must look to modern day symbols as being metaphors.

Think about this…
Can we think of the Internet as being Goddess or YIN energy? Think about the sharing, free downloads, collaboration of compiling all this information. Let’s maybe say it started as YIN and now is going YANG as the biggest companies in the world COMPETE (YANG word) for profits. That’s when we start having issues…competition some times breeds contempt and steps away from the whole concept of collaboration, maybe?

What do you think? Worth thinking about?

Have a blessed day!

Diet tips for very busy people!

The editors of Healthy Cooking have eight tips on how to lose weight when you don’t have much time:

  • Since weight loss is a simple matter of calories consumed and calories
expended, just eat fewer calories than you burn–about 25 percent less than normal. This is an easy way to drop a few pounds.
  • Make fruits, vegetables, whole grains and high-fiber foods staples of your diet.
  • Eliminate or limit added fats, including butter, oil, margarine, sauces and dressings.
  • Be sure to choose lean meats with “loin” or “round” in the name. Also, only consume reduced-fat (instead of full-fat) dairy products.
  • An easy way to lower your daily caloric intake is to skip high-calorie
drinks and instead sip low-fat or fat-free milk, water, sugar-free beverages and occasionally a small amount of juice.
  • Get organized! On your days off, prepare several meals. Freeze family-size or single portions in microwave-safe containers.
  • Make a grocery list of the week’s meals and shop just once a week to save time and money. After you unpack the groceries, immediately prepare and portion out veggie sticks, veggie dip, fruit and nuts in individual ready-to-go containers.
  • Don’t get bored! Try a combination of quick-to-eat snack foods, such as
yogurt with granola, veggie sticks, fruit or whole grain bread with reduced-fat peanut butter.

eat this and look younger……

Eat THIS! You’ll Look Younger

What if you could stop spending so much money on expensive face creams and instead eat your way to beautiful skin? You might be able to do just that. By consuming the right foods and drinks–from acerola cherries to green tea–you can get a natural glow in as little as three weeks from the inside out, reports Forbes. Since the foods are all healthy, it’s worth a try.

Here are five tips for beautiful skin. Find out how to get a complexion that glows–without spending a lot of time or money.

1. Eat seasonal, local foods
To help turn the clock back on your face, eat a healthy diet. Specifically, make sure you consume five servings of fresh vegetables and fruits every day. Here’s the catch: For the biggest punch, they should be in season and locally grown.

Here’s a quick guide of what to eat when:

  • Winter: cabbages, leeks, broccoli, cauliflower, oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, tangelos, lemons and papayas.
  • Spring: zucchini, rhubarb, artichokes, asparagus, spring peas, broccoli, pineapples, mangoes, cherries and apricots.
  • Summer: corn, cucumbers, tomatoes, summer squash, green beans, watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, cherries, blueberries, peaches, apricots, kiwi, raspberries and plums.
  • Fall: eggplant, pumpkins, winter squash, broccoli, spinach, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, cranberries, apples, pomegranates, grapes, tangerines, pears and oranges.
  • All seasons: carrots and potatoes

2. Eat acerola cherries
This fruit not only will provide 100 percent of your daily vitamin C, but also it will fight wrinkles as it protects against cell oxidation. If you can’t find acerola cherries, dark-colored vegetables, such as spinach and sweet potatoes, also help speed cellular turnover.

3. Drink green tea
The No. 1 way we damage our skin is by soaking up the sun. No matter how slight, sunburn ages your skin. In addition to limiting your exposure to the sun and wearing sunscreen when you do go outside, drinking green tea may help block destructive ultraviolet rays and protect your skin, according to the Archives of Dermatology.

4. Eat fresh berries
Fresh berries–from blueberries to strawberries–infuse dull skin with color and brightness, skin care specialist Bella Schneider told Forbes. If you want something exotic, embrace the latest berry trend: the Himalayan sea buckthorn berry. Eat it or use it topically on your face. It has a high concentration of antioxidants, vitamin C and the rare omega-7 fatty acid.

5. Eat cottage cheese
Cottage cheese, which is packed with selenium and other essential minerals that are known to fight dry skin and dandruff, will help boost your skin’s moisture level.

Sex Secrets Men Wish You Knew

Sex Secrets Men Wish You Knew
By Laura Snyder

If you could tap into every male’s mind, you’d be surprised by just what he would tell you about your sessions together in the sack.  Read on for the five sexy secrets he wishes you knew. (Surprise! No threesomes involved!)

He Loves Your Body

He thinks that you – all of you – are hot. Hello, that’s why he tries so damn hard to get you naked.  So, if he obviously covets your deliciously undressed derriere, why are you still covering yourself up with the sheet or insisting on only doing the deed in utter darkness?

Acrobatics Aren’t All That

Think of all the simple things men get pleasure from: pizza, beer, football, boobies. Why then do you think you always need to go Kama Sutra style to get his attention?  Enthusiasm and a warm body are pretty much all it takes to turn him on.  So, you can take it easy once in awhile.

He Has More than One Hot Spot

While the center of his sexual universe might be between his legs, that doesn’t mean you should ignore his other erogenous galaxies.  Take the time to explore some of his other sensitive spots, like the back of his neck or his inner thighs.

Wetter Is Always Better

Dry friction – for you or for him — is no friend to fornication. Says one sexologist, “Great sex is two things: funny and wet.” Whether it’s with spit, lube, or natural juices, let your, uh, love flow.

He Wants Your Help

He knows you’ve got intimate knowledge of what does and doesn’t work for you, so don’t keep him in the dark about how to get you where you want to go. Give lots of feedback with words or body language and don’t be shy about giving yourself a hand.

11 great foods help you lose weight (after the holiday of course!)

RealAge.com has the skinny on these 11 foods that speed weight loss: 1. YogurtLoaded with calcium, yogurt is not only good for your bones and teeth, but also helps stop fat absorption.

2. EggsStart your day with an egg for a natural fat-burning boost.

3. PistachiosThese delicious nuts are packed with protein, fiber and good fat–all of which will leave you feeling full longer. (MY FAVORITE!!!)

4. GrapefruitEating half a grapefruit before a meal can help you shed pounds.

5. AvocadosThe secret ingredient in avocados is leptin, a hormone that actually curbs hunger by letting your brain know you’re full so you’ll stop eating.

6. MushroomsSubstitute mushrooms for meat in your favorite recipe. They’re just as filling without the saturated fat found in meat.

7. Olive OilOlive oil is not only good for your heart, but also your diet, thanks to the hunger-busting ingredient oleic acid.

8. Whole GrainsWhole grains help you whittle your middle. Studies have shown that people who consume more whole grains have less belly fat.

9. Red PepperCapsaicin, the heat-inducing compound in red peppers, actually curbs your appetite.

10. Fava BeansFava beans, a lean type of protein with plenty of flavonoids, help cut the build-up of belly fat.

11. Rice With Veggies Mix high-fiber vegetables, such as broccoli, carrots or kale, with rice. The delicious combo will help you to feel full longer so you’ll end up eating fewer calories later.

the real reason for blushing…it’s a virtue!

If you blush, it is a sign of virtue.

People who are easily embarrassed are more trustworthy,
generous and more likely to be monogamous, according to a study from the
University of California, Berkeley.

“Moderate levels of embarrassment are signs of virtue,”
lead study author Matthew Feinberg said in a university news release.
“Our data suggests embarrassment is a good thing, not something you
should fight.”

Do note that the findings apply to moderate levels of embarrassment and not feelings of shame or extreme social anxiety.

The study: The Berkeley team ran two experiments to measure embarrassment.

  • Experiment No. 1: Sixty college students
were videotaped as they told a personal story about an embarrassing
moment, such as mistaking an overweight woman for someone who was
pregnant. The speakers were rated on how embarrassed they felt. The
students then played a game that is used in economics research to
measure selflessness. Participants who were most embarrassed when they
told their stories, showed the most generosity during the game.
  • Experiment No. 2: Thirty-eight people whom the
researchers found on Craigslist were asked how often they felt
embarrassed. They then played the same game the students played, and the
researchers measured their cooperativeness and generosity. The results: In every instance, embarrassment suggested a
tendency to be pro-social, Feinberg said. “Embarrassment is one
emotional signature of a person to whom you can entrust valuable
resources. It’s part of the social glue that fosters trust and
cooperation in everyday life,” said the study’s co-author, Robb Willer,
    in the news release.

So what? The findings may be helpful for people seeking reliable partners in business and romance, the researchers said.

The study findings were published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

When HE Doesn’t Want to Have Sex!!

When He Doesn’t Want to Have Sex

By Laura Snyder

That whole “men are always in the mood” thing is a dangerous stereotype.
While more men are finally admitting that a superhuman sex drive isn’t
necessarily a given, most women still feel like a big, fat failure when he’s the
one who suddenly says, “Not tonight dear.”

What’s with his sudden disinterest?

Something Going On Under the Skin

All kinds of medical problems – and their solutions — have sexual side
effects. It could be a hormonal problem linked to an illness. Or impotency
(which may manifest itself as a lack of desire to mask the fear of failure).
But, more likely, it’s something downright routine. Anything from poor hygiene  (which doesn’t exactly do anything for your sex drive either) to medications can  affect desire. Check things out with a doc.

Something Going On In His Head

For starters, he’s not the man he used to be. His sexual appetite is going to
change with age and he’s all too aware that his prime was around age 19. Don’t  think that he’s immune to the same kind of self-image issues you face. He might  be feeling a little insecure about his size, shape or ability to please you.

Something Going On In His Life

Big demands at work? Kids always around? No alone time? He’ll feel distant
for the same reasons you do in those situations. Though his mind and body might  be willing, the drudgework of everyday life – plus stress, fatigue, and
depression — might be keeping him from wanting to, uh, rise to the occasion.

Something Else Entirely

Here’s some bad news: It could be you. Are you feeling less sexual? Letting
things get boring? We’re not suggesting that you need a make-over (chances are  it’s not that he’s no longer attracted to you), but it can’t hurt to make an
effort to feed desire. After all, if you’re both sitting around waiting for the
other person to make a move, neither of you are getting any.

British study finds correlation between birth month & career

People who are born in March are more likely to become a pilot, while those born in June could be headed to the CEO’s office.

That’s the word, believe it or not, from a British study that has found a correlation between birth month and career paths.

A team from Britain’s Office for National Statistics analyzed the birth months of people in 19 different occupations–from blue collar to professionals–using information from the most recent British census.

London’s Daily Mail reports that the results appear to indicate that a child’s birth month could make him or her statistically more likely to become a doctor–or a bricklayer.

Here is a sampling of careers likely for each birth month:

  • January: physicians and debt collectors
  • February: artists
  • March: pilots and musicians
  • April: fairly even spread of professions
  • May: politicians
  • June: chief executive officers
  • July: bricklayers, train drivers and artists
  • August: bricklayers
  • September: pro sports athlete, physicist
  • October: fairly even spread of professions
  • November: fairly even spread of professions
  • December: dentists

Why women should have lots and lots of sex!!!!

Older women who have an active and satisfying sex life enjoy an unexpected advantage: They age better and enjoy a higher quality of life as they grow older.

That’s the word from researchers at the Stein Institute for Research on Aging at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, who found that the association between sex and aging even impacted women in their late 80s, reports HealthDay News.

Information was collected from more than 1,200 San Diego women, ages 60 to 89. Within each 10-year age group, the following percentage of women reported being satisfied with their sex life:

  • 60 to 69: 67 percent
  • 70 to 79: 60 percent
  • 80 to 89: 61 percent”Contrary to our earlier hypothesis, sexual satisfaction was not significantly associated with age,” study co-author Wesley K. Thompson said in a news release.

Although the levels of sexual activity and functioning did vary significantly depending on the woman’s age, their perceived quality of life, successful aging and sexual satisfaction remained positive.

“What this study tells us is that many older adults retain their ability to enjoy sex well into old age,” Thompson said. “This is especially true of older adults who maintain a higher level of physical and mental health as they grow older. Furthermore, feeling satisfied with your sex life–whatever your levels of sexual activity–is closely related to your perceived quality of life.”

While Thompson cautions against assessing cause and effect, he does say the study findings suggest that “maintaining a high level of sexual satisfaction may positively reinforce other psychological aspects of successful aging.”

The study findings were published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

Best Reason Ever to Go to Bed Early

Best Reason Ever to Go to Bed Early

Skimping on sleep may help you to be more productive–or finish that book you just can’t put down–but the long-term effect of sleep deprivation is daunting: It could put you at a greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. HealthDay News reports that the body appears to use the brain’s downtime during sleep to sweep away disease-related material. But if you’re not sleeping enough, it can derail this process.

Find out the top 10 warning signs of Alzheimer’s and which memory-loss behaviors are just a typical part of normal aging.

Researchers from Washington University in St. Louis note that while their finding is preliminary, it could suggest a link between sleep deprivation and the risk of developing the fatal, brain-robbing disease.

“We’ve known for some time that significant sleep deprivation has negative effects on cognitive [brain] function comparable to that of alcohol intoxication,” Dr. Stephen Duntley, professor of neurology and director of Washington University’s Sleep Medicine Center, said in a university news release. “But it’s recently become apparent that prolonged sleep disruption and deprivation can actually play an important role in pathological processes that underlie diseases. This connection to Alzheimer’s disease isn’t confirmed yet in humans, but it could be very important.”

In healthy people, the levels of the amyloid beta protein, which is the marker for Alzheimer’s disease, do seem to ebb and flow, dropping to their lowest point about six hours after sleep and returning to the highest point after maximum wakefulness. “We looked at many different behaviors, and the transitions between sleep and wakefulness were the only phenomena that strongly correlated with the rise and fall of amyloid beta in the spinal fluid,” said Dr. Randall Bateman, associate professor of neurology at Washington University School of Medicine.

Interestingly, this pattern was most prevalent in healthy, young people and less pronounced in older adults, who often suffer from shorter or more disrupted periods of sleep. They think the brain’s low activity during sleep allows the body to clear amyloid beta through the spinal fluid.

Levels of amyloid beta in older adults with Alzheimer’s appear to be constant, suggesting a possible link between lack of sleep and people’s odds for developing the disease, reports HealthDay News.

The study: Volunteers were divided into three groups.

  • Group 1: People aged 60 and older who tested positive for the presence of amyloid beta plaques in the brain.
  • Group II: People aged 60 and older who did not have amyloid beta plaques.
  • Group III: Healthy people ranging in age from 18 to 60 years.

Amyloid beta levels were monitored with a spinal tap–every hour for up to 36 hours. The volunteers’ activities during this time were videotaped and their brain activity was monitored.

The results: In the first group, the amyloid beta levels remained virtually constant, but in the other two groups, the levels regularly rose and fell in snake-like waves. While the highs and lows of this pattern were more pronounced in the younger participants, they were flatter in older people. Activities did not impact the changes in amyloid beta levels, but sleep and wakefulness consistently occurred before peaks and drops.

“It’s still speculation, but there are tantalizing hints that better sleep may be helpful in reducing Alzheimer’s disease risk,” concluded Duntley. “We know from a number of studies that exercise enhances sleep, and research also has shown that exercise is associated with decreased risk of Alzheimer’s. Sleep might be one link through which that effect occurs.”

The study findings were published in the Archives of Neurology.

Sleepless? Most Americans are sleep deprived!

Sleepless? You’re not alone…

Posted on September 1, 2011 by Handmade Jewelry by Kayla Grace Designs & Common Sense Holistic Wellness

We are a sleep deprived nation!

Here’s some famous people who were insomniacs as well:

The top 10 most famous insomniacs of all time:

1. Arianna Huffington, founder of The Huffington Post
She once got so little sleep that she passed out from exhaustion, breaking her cheekbone. Since then, Huffington is a fervent anti-insomnia crusader, declaring lack of sleep a feminist issue. She has even installed napping rooms for employees in her workplace.

2. Vincent Van Gogh, painter
Don’t try this at home, kids, but Van Gogh treated his insomnia by dousing his mattress and pillow with camphor, which
is related to turpentine. Historians think this may have slowly poisoned him and factored into his suicide.

3. Bill Clinton, president
The former president of the United States, who famously slept just five hours a night, partly blames his heart attack on fatigue.

4. Marilyn Monroe, actress
Her insomnia, which may have been linked to her emotional turbulence, was treated with sleeping pills. The day before she
overdosed and died, she was reportedly enraged when she heard a friend had slept for 15 hours.

5. Abraham Lincoln, president
Lincoln didn’t fight his long-suffering insomnia. Instead, he took long walks at midnight.

6. Madonna, singer
Madonna’s brother, Christopher Ciccone, dished on his famous sister, insisting that she blames her insomnia on an “unbridled
desire for fame and fortune.” Madonna treats it with medication.

7. Judy Garland, actress
When she was only a teenager, the movie studio demanded she stay thin. Garland became addicted to amphetamines, which
she says caused her insomnia–keeping her awake for three or four days at a time.

8. Groucho Marx, comic actor
Marx says it was the 1929 stock market crash that triggered his insomnia. When he couldn’t sleep, he would do one of
two things: call strangers on the phone and insult them or he would write jokes.

One such joke, written in the middle of the night:
Q: What do you get when you cross an insomniac, an agnostic and a dyslexic?
A: Someone who stays up
all night wondering if there is a Dog.

9. Margaret Thatcher, politician
As the British prime minister, Thatcher slept just four hours a night, saying, “Sleep is for wimps.”

10. Tallulah Bankhead, actress
This early 20th century film star and libertine solved her insomnia by hiring gay “caddies” to sit with her and hold her hand until she fell asleep.

Remember, a lack of sleep causes mood and personality changes. AA says if you are:

Acronym HALT you are setting yourself up foor a variety of things…in the case of alcoholics, a slip off the wagon….for the rest of us, how about accidents, arguements, mood changes, depression, illness (one single poor nights sleep reduces your immune system’s capacity to ward off what ever bug is going around), etc. Being chronically tired can shorten your life.

Aromatherapy like lavender oil can help…give it a try?

Food Cures for What Ails Yah!

Few things jolt you awake on a sluggish morning like a hot cup of coffee. But it turns out your daily brew is doing more than just fueling your day: It can actually boost your memory and reduce your risk of dementia later in life. And many other everyday foods possess powerful abilities to soothe aches and pains, lower blood pressure, enhance your mood, and more.

Here are some of Everyday Health diet and nutrition expert
Joy Bauer’s favorite food cures for your biggest health concerns

Alleviate
Aches: Ginger

This pungent, spicy root contains chemicals that work
similarly to some anti-inflammatory medications, so it has potential to help
relieve arthritis pain. If you’re dealing with aching joints, try adding a hit of ginger to your menu every day.

Getting your daily dose can be as easy as steeping a few slices of ginger root in hot water to make a delicious “tea.” Also try grating fresh ginger into stir-fries or stews, and adding fresh or ground ginger to smoothies, oatmeal, or a healthy muffin or fruit crisp recipe. Or nibble on a slice or two of crystallized ginger to satisfy a sweet craving after dinner

Lower Blood Pressure: Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are rich in two blood pressure-lowering nutrients: potassium and magnesium. Potassium helps offset sodium’s negative effects on blood pressure, and potatoes (both sweet and white) are one of the richest sources of this beneficial mineral. Diets high in magnesium have also been linked to lower risk of developing high blood pressure. To make your own healthy French “fries”: Cut sweet potatoes into thin strips, coat with oil spray and
desired seasonings, and bake at 400 degrees for about 25 minutes, or until
brown and crispy.

Steady Blood Sugar: Egg Whites

Egg whites are the perfect base for a diabetes-friendly meal because they’re low in carbs and calories (just 17 per white) and rich in high-quality protein, a winning formula that helps keep your blood sugar steady and weight in check.

For breakfast, have an omelet with four egg whites (or one whole egg plus two to three egg whites), plenty of vegetables, and some reduced-fat cheese. For lunch, make a vegetarian burrito with scrambled eggs, black beans, sautéed peppers and onions, and spicy salsa folded inside a low-carb wrap. Hard-boiled whites are also a great snack option. Stuff the centers with a dab of
hummus for a healthy take on deviled eggs.

Lower Cholesterol: Pistachio Nuts

These little powerhouses are a great source of phytosterols, natural plant compounds that block the absorption of dietary cholesterol. They’re also rich in monounsaturated fat, fiber, and antioxidants — all of which are good for heart health.

Pistachios are also great for weight control, which is an important health goal for many people with high cholesterol. They have the fewest calories per nut of all varieties (30 nuts have just 100 calories), and peeling the shells slows you down so your snack takes longer to eat, which can translate into fewer calories overall.

Boost Your Mood: Edamame

Edamame (young soybeans) are packed with both protein and fiber — a blood sugar-balancing combination that can help keep bad moods at bay. Extreme or erratic fluctuations in blood sugar can compound stress and leave you feeling irritable and cranky.

Munch on edamame pods throughout the day, add shelled edamame to stir fries and salad, or try roasted beans for a satisfying snack with a major crunch.

Bolster
Your Memory: Coffee

Java lovers, remember this: There’s growing evidence that the benefits
of coffee
extend well beyond a short-lived improvement in attention and focus. New research suggests that regular coffee drinkers may be at lower risk for cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia as they age. Scientists believe the synergistic effects of caffeine and antioxidants found in coffee beans may be responsible for the beverage’s brain benefits.

Just make sure you don’t load up your coffee with sugar or cream — use fat-free, 1 percent, or soy milk and no more than two teaspoons of sugar in your morning mugful. While most people can enjoy a few cups of coffee a day without any issues at all, those with insomnia and gastrointestinal issues should go easy or avoid coffee. If you have high blood pressure, ask your doctor about how much caffeine is safe for you to consume.

Sleepless? That Could be Making you Fat! Here’s what to do about it!

Sleep: The Gift of the Gods

By

Irene A. Masiello

While most of us could use a week at a spa de-stressing, most often our heavy
schedules barely allow enough time to get a good night’s sleep. Sleep is the
gift of the Gods and most of us need more of it to recharge our spirits.

We are a sleep deprived nation and not getting enough rest has vast implications. When we’re tired our cognitive function drops, job performance decreases, our concentration is diminished, we lose our tempers faster and our waist-lines increase.

“The Duvet Diet,” a sleep-yourself-thinner plan advanced by author Jane Worthington, report London’s Times Online and Daily Record indicates that one extra hour of sleep a night every night for a year could translate to a weight loss of 10 pounds.

Dr. Shahrad Taheri, who also operates an obesity clinic, at University
of Bristol has done extensive research in this area and told the Times Online, “How much sleep we have affects our IQ, our suicide risk, our chance of substance abuse and our weight.”

For decades, the national average of body weight has been on the increase. Most of us admit we’re getting far less sleep, too. Are the two really connected? Yes. Obviously, if we’re awake longer, we have the opportunity to consume more calories. But it’s more than that:

A bad night’s sleep usually equates with  over-eating the next day & may convert to an increase of 1000 calories  in an attempt to overcome fatigue

Hormones that control appetite are decreases  with a lack of sleep

Lower glucose tolerance levels result from a poor  quality of sleep and, therefore, can also be a factor in obesity by increasing the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

Less sleep equates to raising body mass index  (BMI) and that applies to kids, too.

Also, a single poor night’s sleep can depress and compromise our immune systems.

Interestingly enough, RealAge.com tells us eating the right foods
can help us sleep.

Bananas,” RealAge.com states, “They’re practically a sleeping pill in a peel. Bananas contain sleep aides melatonin and serotonin as well as magnesium, a known muscle relaxant.”

Also, Mom was right, warm milk is a great sleep aide because it contains a trace of tryptophan, an amino acid with a sedative-like effect, as well as calcium.

Honey says RealAge.com is a sleep aide. Put a teaspoon or two of honey in warm milk or chamomile tea. This tiny bit of glucose will send a message to your brain to turn off a neurotransmitter that has been linked to alertness.

Oatmeal is wonderful source of melatonin; make it with warm milk and a drizzle of honey.

Almonds are not only good for your heart, but they also contain
tryptophan and magnesium which assists as in getting more sleep. Drop some
sliced almonds into the oatmeal with a half of mashed banana with the honey and the warm milk. Sweet dreams, cupcake, and reduce your cholesterol, too, while your hug your teddy.

Whole wheat toast with a little honey and have a cup of chamomile tea can make for a late snack that’s low cal and high octane zzzzzz.

Set the stage for a great night’s sleep by having a turkey sandwich on whole
wheat bread or have just the turkey with a small white potato and you will be
on your way to la-la land after that bubble bath.

According to DrSears.com the best dinners to induce a good night’s sleep?

Pasta with parmesan cheese

Hummus with whole wheat pita bread

Meats and poultry with veggies

Tuna salad sandwich

Scrambled eggs and cheese

Cottage cheese, pasta and seafood

Sesame seeds sprinkled on salad with tuna chunks and whole wheat crackers

For those watching your cholesterol and concerned about saying “cheese” too often ask your doctor about taking calcium supplements—it’s a great sleep aide but don’t use it unless your physician says it’s right for you.

Try a little aromatherapy and use some lavender oil on a pillow case, too.

Pleasant dreams.

Life Gets Easier with 1-2-3 of Numerology!

If you want to be the happiest you can be at work, you need to have a passion for what you do.

How do you find that passion? If it’s not burning in your gut and you didn’t
grow up always knowing what you wanted to be, you might as well try everything you can to figure it out. Including numerology.

That’s the word from CareerBuilder.com, which has used the numerology of
birth dates to describe personalities and personal attributes, which in turn can
help you identify compatible jobs.

(Hey, why not? Even if you’re skeptical about this, it could be fun to try
it.)

Numerology is the language of numbers and their corresponding symbolic
significance, writes Judy Smith, author of “Business Mojo: Achieving Success
Through Mystical Exploration,” on CareerBuilder.com.

The first thing you need to do is figure out your master number from one to
nine, which is calculated based on your birth date. Each master number is
assigned certain characteristics with specific strengths and weaknesses.

How to compute your master number:

  • Write your birth date in numbers. Example: 1/20/1982
  • Add the numbers in the year together: 1+9+8+2=20
  • Add the month and day of birth to the year number: 1+20+20=41
  • Add the end result together to obtain a one-digit number: 4+1=5

Smith describes the attributes and ideal careers for each master
number:

Master Number 1: Leadership, independence. A natural leader and
innovator; excellent in management levels. Ideal careers include inventor,
designer, director, retail business owner, producer, sales manager, engineer,
executive or small business owner.

Master Number 2: Cooperative, team player. Doesn’t mind not being the
boss. Ideal careers include lawyer, diplomat, clerk, caterer, insurance
adjuster and architect.

Master Number 3: Joyful, creative. Multi-talented; requires
self-expression for happiness at work. Ideal careers include artist,
musician, medical field, lawyer, athlete, designer and actor.

Master Number 4: Structure; order. Best when working with form and
structure. Crave an organized environment to produce best work.
Ideal careers include building trade, mechanic, accountant, executive, software designer, banking.

Master Number 5: Craves variety. An ideal communicator with strong
language skills. Ideal careers include salesperson, advertising, writer,
teacher, editor, marketing, e-commerce, actor and lawyer.

Master Number 6: Giving and receiving love. Strong in service to
others and domestic concerns. Ideal careers include homemaker, teacher,
artist, florist, singer, beautician, fashion field, musician, caterer.

Master Number 7: Spiritual inner knowledge. Philosophical with a
yearning for truth and education. Ideal careers include healer, author,
farmer, photographer and researcher.

Master Number 8: Material expression. Competitive and
authoritative. Ideal careers include banker, financier, pharmacist, engineer,
lawyer, broker and real estate.

Master Number 9: Humanitarian endeavors. Idealistic and
compassionate. Ideal careers include scientist, spiritual leader, doctor,
teacher, clergy and diplomat.

Meet Amber…a miracle

What every man must teach his daughter!

from Netscape

She may be Daddy’s little girl now, but if you do your job right, you’ll raise her to be an independent young woman–one who knows right from wrong and how to stick to the values you taught her.

Perhaps no greater test of those values comes when she begins to date.

Dr. Linda Nielsen, professor of adolescent and educational psychology at Wake
Forest University and author of the book “Between Fathers & Daughters:
Enriching and Rebuilding Your Adult Relationship,” says fathers have more
important lessons to offer their daughters than they might realize.

And when it comes to men, Nielsen recommends teaching your daughter to make wise choices and get the best out of her relationships with men by teaching her these five things:

1. Anger and Assertiveness
Teach your daughter that it’s a good thing for her to express her anger and to be assertive about her opinions and her needs. It may sound counter intuitive to a peaceful household, but let your daughter practice on you while she is growing up. Don’t withdraw from her when she is upset. By encouraging her to express herself you will enhance her future relationships with the men in her life.

2. Be Herself
Teach your daughter to remain true to what she values. Show appreciation for her talents and interests and she will be less likely to try to change who she is to win a man’s love or approval in future.

3. Communication
Teach your daughter to communicate directly with the men in her life. Share this lesson by not allowing her to communicate with you through her mother or others in the family. Her brother, her boyfriend and her boss will thank you later.

4. Money
Teach your daughter how to become financially self-reliant so she grows up without believing that a man–her father, a boyfriend or a husband–is the key to avoiding financial hardships or increasing her financial status. Teach her a simple equation: Good Grades + Educational Interests = Higher Earning Potential. Not needing a man for monetary reasons will allow her the freedom and confidence to make wiser choices about relationships–choices
based on love rather than on a man’s money or status.

5. Myths and misconceptions
Teach her to let go of the myths and misconceptions she has about men. Don’t let negative stereotypes limit your relationship. Talk with her about these sexist myths and misconceptions. For example, show her that men are willing to talk about personal issues, men can be empathetic and nurturing, men can communicate well and men do love their children just as much as women.

Word Press is rather difficult, isn’t it?

Hmmm, seems that some times WordPress makes blogging impossible.

Sorry for the repeat articles below but as you can see, for some wacky reason, my July 25th post landed up coming before my July 20th post and it repeated because I never got a message from my blog that it had been published.

Honestly, Google blogger is much easier to use so for you new bloggers, you might want to try that and work your way to WordPress.

My beloved boss and cherish friend got me WORD PRESS FOR DUMMIES…

I think he should have gotten WORD PRESS FOR IDIOT SAVANTS.

I send blessings to you all!

Is there a curse to being 27, 28 or 29 years old? Here’s what this age is about & why some drastic things happen!

The Curse of Being 27-29 Years Old?

It’s not a curse at all…

Do you believe heaven and eternal life? Do you believe in  reincarnation? Most of the world believes in reincarnation and those who do out number Christianity and Judiasm…How about this….Christianity included reincaranation until about 6AD when Constantive decided that it was not in the best interest of his empire. Moderate Judiasm included reincarantion until about 1850. Orthodox Judiasm still includes it even today!

Here’s something you probably don’t know. The planet Saturn makes its first
return to the position of a person’s birth (every single person’s) at this
time. It marks one of the most important times in someone’s life. Every single
one of us have this celestial marker.

It marks the close of a major life cycle.

This planetary aspect will happen again around 56-58 yrs old. Both time frames mark a time of endings and new beginnings. It favors those who have done the work that’s been needed. The one’s who have grown the least in their personal lives will be the hardest hit by this cycle. And it’s a time when a substantial portion of time has passed and one needs to get on with
making life work.

So, this is what you see when people pass on during this time period. You see those leave life who can’t make the changes they must make. Pay attention to who gets married during these years, who has a child, who gets promoted, who settles down. If you have sustained many inappropriate actions, you will pay the deepest during these cycles. Life is about growing and learning and while the Karma Task Maker, Saturn, brings great frustration it can also make your dreams come true so long had you have done it all the right way and taken no short cuts.

Find out about your Saturn position at ETSY from a Court TV Psychic Detective….lol, me!

TIP: Do not sign any contracts from now until late August. I have a couple of lawyers who will argue for this astrological data…

Improving Quality of Life, Avoiding Alzheimer’s and Growing Older GRACE-fully as a Happier and Healthier You-Tips for a Longer Life! ;-)

Most people hate change but here are some changes that can save your life and make the rest of your life more gratifying. Grape and bluberry capsules are available so not to worry about the sugar if you tend to run high glucose numbers!

HOW TO LIVE A HEALTHIER AND LONGER LIFE
By Gary Small, M.D. Director of the UCLA Center on Aging.
A must read!!

“The idea that Alzheimer’s is entirely genetic and unpreventable is perhaps the greatest misconception about the disease,” says Gary Small, M.D., director of the UCLA Center on Aging. Researchers now know that Alzheimer’s, like heart disease and cancer, develops over decades and can be influenced by lifestyle factors including cholesterol, blood pressure, obesity, depression, education, nutrition, sleep and mental, physical and social activity.

The big news: Mountains of research reveals that simple things you do every day might cut your odds of losing your mind to Alzheimer’s.
In search of scientific ways to delay and outlive Alzheimer’s and other dementias, I tracked down thousands of studies and interviewed dozens of experts.

Here are 10 strategies I found most surprising.

1.  Have coffee. In an amazing flip-flop, coffee is the new brain tonic. A large European study showed that drinking three to five cups of coffee a day in midlife cut Alzheimer’s risk 65% in late life. University of South Florida researcher Gary Arendash credits caffeine: He says it reduces dementia-causing amyloid in animal brains. Others credit coffee’s antioxidants. So drink up, Arendash advises, unless your doctor says you shouldn’t.

2.  Floss. Oddly, the health of your teeth and gums can help predict dementia. University of Southern California research found that having periodontal disease before age 35 quadrupled the odds of dementia years later. Older people with tooth and gum disease score lower on memory and cognition tests, other studies show. Experts speculate that inflammation in diseased mouths migrates to the brain.

3.Google. Doing an online search can stimulate your aging brain even more than reading a book, says UCLA’s Gary Small, who used brain MRIs to prove it. The biggest surprise: Novice Internet surfers, ages 55 to 78, activated key memory and learning centers in the brain after only a week of Web surfing for an hour a day.

4. Grow new brain cells. Impossible, scientists used to say. Now it’s believed that thousands of brain cells are born daily. The trick is to keep the newborns alive. What works: aerobic exercise (such as a brisk 30-minute walk every day), strenuous mental activity, eating salmon and other fatty fish, and avoiding obesity, chronic stress, sleep deprivation, heavy drinking and vitamin B deficiency.

5. Drink apple juice. Apple juice can push production of the “memory chemical” acetylcholine; that’s the way the popular Alzheimer’s drug Aricept works, says Thomas Shea, Ph.D., of the University of Massachusetts. He was surprised that old mice given apple juice did better on learning and memory tests than mice that received water. A dose for humans: 16 ounces, or two to three apples a day.

6. Protect your head. Blows to the head, even mild ones early in life, increase odds of dementia years later. Pro football players have 19 times the typical rate of memory-related diseases. Alzheimer’s is four times more common in elderly who suffer a head injury, Columbia University finds. Accidental falls doubled an older person’s odds of dementia five years later in another study. Wear seat belts and helmets, fall-proof your house, and don’t take risks.

7. Meditate. Brain scans show that people who meditate regularly have less cognitive decline and brain shrinkage – a classic sign of Alzheimer’s – as they age. Andrew Newberg of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine says yoga meditation of 12 minutes a day for two months improved blood flow and cognitive functioning in seniors with memory problems.

8. Take D. A “severe deficiency” of vitamin D boosts older Americans’ risk of cognitive impairment 394%, an alarming study by England’s University of Exeter finds. And most Americans lack vitamin D. Experts recommend a daily dose of 800 IU to 2,000 IU of vitamin D3.

9. Fill your brain. It <http://brain.it/> ‘s called “cognitive reserve.” A rich accumulation of life experiences – education, marriage, socializing, a stimulating job, language skills, having a purpose in life, physical activity and mentally demanding leisure activities – makes your brain better able to tolerate plaques and tangles. You can even have significant Alzheimer’s pathology and no symptoms of dementia if you have high cognitive reserve, says David Bennett, M.D., of Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center.

10. Avoid infection. Astonishing new evidence ties Alzheimer’s to cold sores, gastric ulcers, Lyme disease, pneumonia and the flu. Ruth Itzhaki, Ph.D., of the University of Manchester in England estimates the cold-sore herpes simplex virus is incriminated in 60% of Alzheimer’s cases. The theory: Infections trigger excessive beta amyloid “gunk” that kills brain cells. Proof is still lacking, but why not avoid common infections and take appropriate vaccines, antibiotics
and antiviral agents?

What to Drink for Good Memory

A great way to keep your aging memory sharp and avoid Alzheimer’s is to drink the right stuff.

a. Tops: Juice. A glass of any fruit or vegetable juice three times a week slashed Alzheimer’s odds 76% in Vanderbilt University research. Especially protective:blueberry, grape and apple juice, say other studies.

b. Tea: Only a cup of black or green tea a week cut rates of cognitive decline in older people by 37%, reports the Alzheimer’s Association. Only brewed tea works. Skip bottled tea, which is devoid of antioxidants.

c. Caffeine beverages. Surprisingly, caffeine fights memory loss and Alzheimer’s, suggest dozens of studies. Best sources: coffee (one Alzheimer’s researcher drinks five cups a day), tea and chocolate. Beware caffeine if you are pregnant, have high blood pressure, insomnia or anxiety.

d. Red wine: If you drink alcohol, a little red wine is most apt to benefit your aging brain. It’s high in antioxidants. Limit it to one daily glass for women, two for men. Excessive alcohol, notably binge drinking, brings on Alzheimer’s.

e. Two to avoid: Sugary soft drinks, especially those sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. They make lab animals dumb. Water with high copper content also can up your odds of Alzheimer’s. Use a water filter that removes excess minerals.

5 Ways to Save Your Kids from Alzheimer’s Now

Alzheimer’s isn’t just a disease that starts in old age. What happens to your child’s brain seems to have a dramatic impact on his or her likelihood of Alzheimer’s many decades later. Here are five things you can do now to help save your child from Alzheimer’s and memory loss later in life, according to the latest research.

1. Prevent head blows: Insist your child wear a helmet during biking, skating, skiing, baseball, football, hockey, and all contact sports. A major blow as well as tiny repetitive unnoticed concussions can cause damage, leading to memory loss and Alzheimer’s years later.

2 Encourage language skills: A teenage girl who is a superior writer is eight times more likely to escape Alzheimer’s in late life than a teen with poor linguistic skills. Teaching young children to be fluent in two or more languages
makes them less vulnerable to Alzheimer’s.

3. Insist your child go to college: Education is a powerful Alzheimer’s deterrent. The more years of formal schooling, the lower the odds. Most Alzheimer’s prone: teenage drop outs. For each year of education, your risk of dementia drops 11%, says a recent University of Cambridge study.

4. Provide stimulation: Keep your child’s brain busy with physical, mental and social activities and novel experiences. All these contribute to a bigger, better functioning brain with more so-called ‘cognitive reserve.’ High cognitive
reserve protects against memory decline and Alzheimer’s.

5. Spare the junk food: Lab animals raised on berries, spinach and high omega-3 fish have great memories in old age. Those overfed sugar, especially high fructose in soft drinks, saturated fat and trans fats become overweight and diabetic, with smaller brains and impaired memories as they age, a prelude to Alzheimer’s.

Lobster Saved, Senior Citizens Killed!

Lobster Rescued; Elders Abused, Exploited, Kidnapped & Murdered

By Irene A. Masiello

George, the lobster, age 140, was rescued from a lobster tank in
an upscale NYC restaurant on Jan.  10, 2009 by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) reported the Associated Press. Acting on a tip, incredibly, PETA was able to save this crustacean from being executed to pamper a palette.

For the last 7 years, after the death of my father via elder abuse, neglect and exploitation, I have been an advocate for awareness about elder abuse and its many hideous “faces.” I am stymied by the lack of concern, compassion and action in combating this terrible social ill that’s costing countless lives.

Though I am an animal lover myself, I was awed by the outrage of
Americans at NFL’s Michael Vick for arranging and betting on dog fighting and
people rushing to save a lobster when one-in-six seniors or more will be
victims of some form of elder abuse.

Other social causes have made real progress. PETA can rescue a lobster
and return it to the safety of the waters offshore Maine. MADD (Mother’s Against Drunk Drivers) has changed the laws of the land regarding drinking and driving. John Walsh, while courageous bearing the horrific pain of losing his little boy, took action and succeeded in revamping our laws regarding exploited and missing kids.

Yet, families of murdered, exploited and abused seniors who have
suffered tragic losses have failed to awaken the consciousness of this country.
While the elderly cannot picket, march in Washington,  D.C., boycott or hold a rally, might we, the families of the victims, myself included, be dropping “the ball?”

Since my book, Paradise Costs—A Victim’s Daughter Fights Back against Elder Abuse, was released, I have heard from many. I have learned that everyone sees elder abuse from their own map of the world with many claiming to be victims.

Before elder abuse literally struck home, I was a transformational
and holistic counselor. Through that work, I have come to recognize there are
few problems but rather challenges to creativity. Therefore, from a personal
perspective, I will not embrace the world of victimhood. My father was the
victim and he “died” as a result of a not so mysterious sequence of events that
are documented in my book which contains my dad’s forensic report.

Many of those who write and, rightfully so, are angry however I believe mustering cou-RAGE, channeling it into action and championing this
cause using in-SPIRIT-ion. To me, information is power and, therefore, I seek
to em-POWER.

Whether our loved ones have been victimized by guardianship or
conservatorship abuse, actual physical abuse, exploitation, neglect, medical,
pharmaceutical or legal malfeasance, the result is the same—a beloved person
has been deprived of their right to life.

Let’s think bigger picture. Let’s redefine elder abuse in its broadest sense and turn to Amnesty International: “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
(UDHR) is the foundation of the international system of protection for human
rights. It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly onDecember 10th, 1948.

“Human rights are basic rights and freedoms that all people are entitled to regardless of nationality, sex, national or ethnic origin, race, religion, language, or other status.

“Human rights include civil and political rights, such as the right to life,
liberty…economic rights including the right… the right to food…Human rights are protected and upheld by international and national laws and treaties.”

With the above in mind, it seems clear, elder abuse, in whatever form it takes is, obviously, a violation of human rights. In my opinion, so long as we are separatists in approach and calling elder abuse by one of its many names, we take away from our underlying social mantra and our aspiration to STOP ALL ELDER ABUSE NOW.

Might it would serve everyone’s best interest, especially our seniors, if we borrow a phrase from Ben Franklin, “Let’s all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately?”

So long as a single senior citizen anywhere in this nation does not evoke the action taken by PETA to protect the life of George the lobster, no person  in this country is safe. So long as we stand apart, we will never do what MADD has done.

It is in keeping with the spirit of oneness, I want to invite everyone to turn your cou-RAGE into action.

We must put our experience and anger to work, we need to re-define the litany of horrific abuses against our family members as violation of human rights and
re-introduce the words, “ELDER ABUSE,” as an umbrella phrase covering:

  • elder  abuse
  • elder  exploitation
  • elder  neglect
  • guardianship abuse
  • conservatorship abuse
  • undue influence (mentally, emotionally, physically by anyone, e.g.: family, lawyers, probate courts, social services, etc.) medical, pharmacological and legal malfeasance
  • breech of fiduciary duty
  • any  of the above that shortens life and wellness
  • any  of the above where cognitive ability is impaired or there is diminishing capacity (visual, mobility, hearing, nutritional infirmities, mental infirmities, intellectual impairment, sensory or social deprivation, etc)
  • in cases were elders sign documents they are unable to understand and/or EXPLAIN the ramifications of
  • power of attorney exploitation
  • any action or inaction by any person including family members and professionals that impacts longevity when the elder has specified their  wish to live as long as possible

(please e-mail me if you have additional suggestions for the above list at irenemasiello@msn.com)

I am requesting, starting immediately, that volunteers unite with a common plea. Let’s stop elder abuse in all forms. Let’s get organized, let’s spread the word that none of us will tolerate members of our families being
denied their human rights.

Remember: President Obama has asked this nation to serve in some
capacity and, perhaps, our path to service has been defined by what we have
experienced. And while speaking about our president, lets remember what
Rosa Parks did in Alabama when she stood her ground and took her rightful place on a bus. Let’s let the Civil Rights movement, MADD, PETA, ACT-UP, John Walsh and others be a template and inspiration to us.

Please, those who have Internet skills, watch TV, listen to the radio or simply cruise the net start data collection on any of the above. At least one volunteer from each U.S. state is needed to serve as “state captain” and another to serve as “state lieutenant.” Perhaps, military phrases may be seen offensive, however, you bet this is a war…let’s remember the casualties; let’s not let our losses be in vain.

For us, who are still standing, we aren’t victims YET. However, remember the statistics. Think about the faltering economy. The vulnerable elderly will be at the greatest risk to deviants and predators. And too many of us we will be, as well, when the expected 15 million victims plus of “elder abuse” manifests in the baby-boomer generation.

Choice time:
Are you part of the problem?

Okay, just keep calling your self a victim and lamenting. Nothing
changes if nothing changes.

Are you part of the solution?

If PETA can act on a tip and save a 140-year old lobster in NYC…what can we do together to save our beloved elders and ourselves?

Do your health homework! Please remember that doctors are burdened with paperwork. We all need to self-advocate!

The very familiar food pyramid has been replaced by this very simple plate demonstrating how a healthy diet can be accomplished.

Even in America many of us are poorly nourished because of fast food, too much going on and pigging out with comfort food.

Recently, I had to do my own leg work about a health issue. I had not been feeling well for months and it turned out, I had a vitamin D deficiency.

I have always been my own and other’s advocates both in the healthcare system and as an adult educator and holistic counselor.

In recent years, we have seen the degradation of a healthcare system that fails us all. Overburdened with the interests of big pharma and greedy insurance companies finds doctors overwhelemed by regulations, medicine’s newest research, the growing numbers of baby boomers seeking healthcare. It’s really up to us to partner with our doctors and stay informed.

Here’s a wonderful free e-book I found about the wonders of magnesium which was very helpful to me. Vitamins D is not absorbable without the presence of magnesium. My doctor had explained that most of us are vitamin D deficient.

Remember, this blog nor any information here, is to be considered a replacement for your licensed healthcare provide, namely your physician. All health care needs should be addressed with you doctor.

the connection between jewelry, holistic health and astrology?

simple…life is complicated and stressful.

Real gemstones feel and look so good and they are a luxury you can easily afford.

Astrology can take some of the guess work out of life. If you understand that wellness is balance of mind, body and soul, you can understand that you are being given an important trilogy of better life balance right here.

Follow us, we are on Twitter.

Have a cup of tea…it’s good for your health!

Mercury is going retrograde on August 2nd @ 11:50 pm

What’s it mean?

Astrology is a language of energy and pattern, it demonstrates the flow of universal energy. Ever hear the expression TIMING IS EVERYTHING? That’s what serious astrology demonstrates. If we know and understand the energy flow, we can be more equipped to handle the changing tides of  life.

Simple question for you: would you rather swim with the tide or against it?

Real astrology can provide you with the direction of the tide. The mass market books speaking about sun signs are garbage. Forget about them, toss them away, they are around because THEY SELL. They are not accurate and simply a waste of time, money and energy. So, do yourself a favor and step away from sun sign stuff.

Mercury is ruler of communication and travel. When it goes retrograde (about 3-4 times a year) things tend to get crazy. That car issue you have been putting off acts up and leaves you stranded. Your travel plans get bogged down, your fax machine goes nuts, you lose your cell phone, etc.

It’s very important not to sign a binding contract, lease, agreement, etc during a Mercury retrograde period. We will update you when those times are coming and when they will pass.

Do not buy a car when Mercury is retrograde, don’t sign a lease, don’t trust that scheduled things will get off when they are supposed to, expect delays, leave earlier than needed, don’t purchase a phone system, move, etc.

Between now and August 2nd get what you need repaired and so it as soon as possible. In the 10 days approaching Aug. 2nd things will get a little frantic re: the above so think ahead and plan.

Mercury retrograde will happen from 8/2 and 8/26 at 6:03pm, dst and even after it’s past, crazy stuff will be going on for about a week past that.

There’s a full moon on Saturday Aug 13 at 2:57PM in the sign Aquarius. This is a good time to conclude things that are up in the air. The New Moon favors starting a new project and that happens at 11:04PM on Aug 28th.

The next Mercury retro time span is approximately 11/24-12/14.

Swim with the tide, folks!

Here’s a REAL astrological chart. If you’d like to see how REAL astrology can help you come to my Etsy shop and chose consultation.

Here’s to your health with a cup of tea!

The healthiest drinks there are:

Tea: Tea has been used for medicinal purposes for hundreds of years and now modern science is verifying why. Containing more polyphenols than many fruits and vegetables, tea is an antioxidant-rich beverage.  It’s rich in compounds that combat cell-damaging oxidative stress and tea has a chemical composition that includes protein, enzymes, carbohydrates and lipids.

Oxidative stress is amolecular imbalance that impedes with the body’s ability to detoxify it self from harmful compounds that can lead to cellular damage. These effects are associated with chronic health problems such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, dementia and even cancer.

Tea has emerged as a natural dietary aid to lower the risk of these health issues because its packed with compounds that protect cells from oxidative stress. Scientifics research indicates that tea strengthens the body by reduces buildup of plaque on arterial walls, increasing the body’s immune system and they believe tea aids in the control and prevention of diabetes.

Coffee: Coffee is also packed with polyphenols but it has a higher content
of antioxidants than green or black tea and other beverages including fruit and
vegetable juices.

Coffee consumption helps to lower cardiovascular risks, as well as lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 50 percent. Coffee also appears to
have a positive effect on neurological diseases with coffee consumption
possibly reducing the risk of both Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

Milk: Milk is an excellent source of protein, calcium and vitamin D and
it helps build teeth and bone strength during childhood and adolescence.

Whether it’s whole, low-fat or chocolate, milk benefits nutrition, bone density, weight loss, muscle-building and more. When it’s consumed after resistance training, both unflavored and chocolate milk versions or even reduced-fat milk, enhance strength and improve muscle development.

Paradise Costs-A Victim’s Daughter Fights Back against Elder Abuse

About Paradise Costs…Deception, corruption, exploitation and manipulation collide in a heart-wrenching story of an infirm 80-year old man with Alzheimer’s who was taken from his family, stripped of his assets and exploited despite the pleas of his next of kin. What makes this story even more compelling? It’s not fiction and it exemplifies a terrifying reality in America today. With the national statistics of elder abuse, exploitation and neglect exploding, this book is an astonishing plea to safeguard the elderly across our nation.

The chilling reality is driven home as readers view the actual forensic report of a victim of elder abuse and exploitation in this compelling tale told through the eyes of a courageous daughter. Her voice, joined by that of an internationally known expert in the field of forensic and geriatric psychiatry, conveys stunning awareness about what constitutes elder abuse, exploitation and undue
influence in this powerful, provocative narrative.

This unique, proactive book urges reader participation through self-contained tear-out letters advocating enactment, amending and enforcement of federal laws to protect millions of vulnerable seniors as well as 78 million baby boomers through the Elder Justice Act and other legislation now before both Houses of Congress.
==

“Paradise Costs is a compelling journey through the scripts and tapes of the past into a dysfunctional family dynamic to which many of us can relate. More than a story of personal tragedy and triumph, this is a call to concrete action in support of the Elder Justice
Act. Irene Masiello’s reality writing creates a simple and efficient way to take a pro-active stance against elder abuse and exploitation.”

“Paradise Costs is a riveting wake-up call for anyone faced with caring for elderly loved ones  including 78 million ‘at risk’ Baby
Boomers. It’s a gripping true story told through the eyes of a
courageous daughter, who demonstrates how ordinary circumstances can turn into an extraordinary chain of events—leading to unthinkable crimes. Through this compelling and
cautionary page-turner, Irene Masiello encounters unforeseen issues and obstacles during her remarkable effort to save her
beloved father, one of too many seniors who fall between the cracks of our outdated and failed system.”

Elder Rage & host of Coping with Care-giving radio show.

tip for those battling diabetes and high blood sugar:

When thinking holistically (mind-body-soul) one has to think about the layers of being…conscious and unconscious. The unconsious is very powerful and it can help or hinder you. I chose to have it help me to feel better and be better. And affirmations work. I knew a man who beat alcholism using affirmations on Post-it notes and I am using his idea from a different perspective.

Here’s how:

Take a Post-it pad and write on about 25 sheets of it an affirmation:

MY BLOOD SUGAR IS GOING DOWN!

Then post each of the Post-it notes in places where you will frequently see them.

I did on my microwave, my bathroom mirror, on my backsplash, on light switches, on the base of my phone, under my computer screen, on the dashboard of my car, on the refridgerator, etc.

I found myself smiling each time I saw this affirmation. Use it for any affirmation on any topic.

THIS WORKED FOR ME!

One must be proactive in wellness and using the unconsious mind and anchoring it with repitition is extremely helpful.

I find wearing stones helpful, as the ancients reported, in obtaining better wellness and balance.

I will be posting information about gemstones and what the legends about them are. If they help…GREAT. If they don’t…LOOK GREAT with stunning hand made jewelry as beautiful and unique, affordable and eye catching accessories.

Also, since it’s said that stones pick up energy of the person wearing them, create a great legacy for your daughters, granddaughters and neices by keeping the female energy (YIN) alive for future generations.

Gorgeous jade 20MM beads…wish someone a long life, good luck, wishes come true!

I get so many compliments when I wear my necklace which is almost identical to the one pictured here. It pops because the colors of the beads are breath-taking and look like they’re worth a fortune. Also the green in my hazel eyes really stand out.Jade is a lovely stone and many people think it only comes in the typical green color. How about this piece to demonstrate the shades of gold, green, pink and cranberry?

This is a clasp-less piece with heafty stones and just a hint of gold plated spacers every 3 beads. It’s toss over your head in 26 inch length.

Jade, legend has it, is the panacea stone supposingly  bringing better health with assistance with a complete array of ailments and bringing good luck and a long life.

An outstanding bargain that will wow your friends and associates!

PRICE $50

please remember not to expose your jewelry to makeup, perfume, hairspray…clean with a soft rag, keep for generations!

A CPA who purchased a piece like this said, “I always feel so lucky and peaceful when I wear it.”

Great jewelry, so perfect for the woman on the go, beautiful, toss over your head, no fussing with clasps…good to go~

Aquamarine 189 carats for a special lady, a perfect gift

this special piece of stunning acquamarine, fresh water pearls and silver snake clasp is a beautiful addition to a lady’s wardrobe. Aquamarine is said to help with sea-sickness (going on a cruise?), being in touch with higher realms and receiving comfort. Aquamarine is March’s birthstone and because Pisces is a water sign, one can understand the attraction to AQUA (blue) MARINE (water).

This is a special gemstone necklace bound to stand out in a crowd. Be the “belle of the ball.”

Here’s more info:
This unique aquamarine necklace, Pisces birthstone, is stunning. It’s a gorgeous necklace with beads from 10mm to a startling 38mm focal bead separated by white fresh water pearls. It measures 21″ from clasp to clasp hoop.

Aquamarine is said to protect those who work near or on the water and  is also said the aquamarine will pick up spirits. It is an excellent stone to use for meditating as it brings a great peace and serenity. Some people can meditate on an aquamarine to receive the wisdom to see truth through meditation.

Aquamarine is very soothing worn as a necklace. Healers say its use can be to help reduce fluid retention which can drive up blood pressure. It has been used to calm the nerves.

The ancient Romans used the aquamarine for diseases of the stomach believing it could cure liver and throat troubles. However, this information is folklore and not intended to treat or diagnose any ailments. Always seek professional medical advice.

For me, I find handling aquamarine to be a very soft and healing time and I love the stone for the way I, personally, feel wearing it. This piece will never be made again because of the difficulty in obtaining these size beads.

Are you Cognitively Impaired or Vitamin Deficient?

WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY JUNE 2011

Are you Cognitively Impaired or Vitamin Deficient?

by Irene A. Masiello
Certified: Holistic Counselor, Adult Educator, Stress Management Consultant

Paradise Costs, A Victim’s Daughter Fights Back against Elder Abuse, my book written in 2009, is a chronicle of my father’s deterioration into the abyss of severe cognitive impairment. This was the consequence of Alzheimer’s and resulted in his subsequent abuse, exploitation and, in the opinion of many, his premature death.

Dad’s tragic decline took years. It was heartbreaking to see a robust and vibrant man once captivated by his love for animals and nature become apathetic, depressed and withdrawn.

Writing Paradise Costs took ten years to complete. It was a stressful marathon filled with agonizing memories, requiring intense focus while processing deep sorrow. Most of my time was spent indoors in front of my computer. I’ve attributed some health issues to the stress and, recently, I was diagnosed as a possible diabetic.

Over the course of this past year, I developed severe and crippling pain in my shoulder, rib cage, chest and foot. I felt weak and exhausted all the time no matter how much rest I got.

I was unable to concentrate, was unsteady on my feet and unable to make decisions. I felt overwhelmed and anxious over slight matters and somewhat immobilized.

My internist, a wonderful man (and a consultant for Paradise Costs), was looking towards a diagnosis of diabetes, especially, since my Dad was insulin dependent. However, under his supervision, I went on a crash diet and lost over 20 lbs.  Fortunately, he diagnosed me as glucose intolerant rather than diabetic.

My glucose numbers were not extremely high. But, rather, they jumped around with great sensitivity to what time I ate, how I slept, the amount of pain I had, stress, etc.  The numbers did not follow a pattern and, ultimately, were low enough for my internist to conclude that I needed no medication for diabetes but rather very careful monitoring of carbohydrate and glucose consumption.  Exercise was advised but that was tough  for me because I was feeling so weak.

Because of a blood issue I have and my hematologist’s orders, I had stopped taking a multi-vitamin years ago. Though I recently asked her again about vitamins, she was adamant. My body is making too many red blood cells and its thought that vitamins would stimulate my bone marrow to produce even more of them.

However, with this new diagnosis of glucose intolerance limiting what I could eat, some vague yet alarming red flags were swirling around my head and I was struggling with them. While somewhat immobilized and beleaguered, I started to wonder if I could be properly nourished since I could not eat fruit, drink a glass of orange juice, have a white potato, etc. How could I consume enough vitamins and minerals to stay healthy now?

I started thinking about the trace minerals I was doing without. I wondered about Vitamin C and my immune system because it seemed that all this pain had started around Christmas last year when I came down with a fever and stayed sick for months.  During this time, the symptoms mentioned earlier seemed to be getting worse.

I was struggling to string this together but really, cognitively, I was not sure I was the person I once was. I justified it saying, “Well, none of us are who we used to be.” A couple  of my friends seemed to be saying the same things, too, and feeling somewhat like me. More justification came with our saying “we’re all aging.”

Then one friend reported that he had been diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency. Once a gal pal was diagnosed with the same shortly after, I hit the Internet running. What I saw online horrified me for I was described perfectly in the pages of symptoms of vitamin D deficiency. It explained so much. I called my internist who said, “Most people are D deficient so you probably will be too. We’ll check.”

He was shocked at the result and stated he never saw a vitamin D level so low.  The normal range of vitamin D in the blood is 30-74. Mine was NINE! The Net said this level of vitamin D deficiency is dangerous.

Vitamin D deficiency is a contributing factor in diabetes and glucose intolerance. It’s thought to help safe guard us against breast, bladder and colon cancer. Deficiency of vitamin D causes body pain, weakness, cognitive impairment, confusion, brittle bones, exhaustion, more.

Vitamin D’s presence in the blood stream regulates the absorption of calcium (a lack of calcium causes osteoporosis, etc.) in the body and my doctor told me my calcium number was high.

The Net says calcium cannot be absorbed without vitamin D and that any slight deviance from the normal calcium range could change someone’s personality both emotionally and  cognitively.  It pointed out that magnesium was critical to the absorption of both vitamin D and calcium as well.

After only three and a-half weeks of vitamin D therapy, the pain I wrestled with for months was reduced by about 60%. The confusion and lethargy lifted somewhat, I felt more cognitively aware and I started to return to who I was. My glucose numbers came down, too. Finally, I was well enough to start walking without feeling faint.

On an outing with a  childhood friend, I remarked, “Imagine what could have happened to me had I fallen  and broken a hip, landed in a nursing home, and lost ability to make cogent  decisions for myself all because of a vitamin deficiency.”

It’s too easy to look at the changes in oneself and dismiss them as simple aging. It’s more difficult to stay informed and active in the information loop.  As we age, our nutritional needs change and, certainly, anyone who is bedridden or a shut-in needs more careful medical supervision and monitoring.

Your physician’s assistance and support is critical. Doctors know a lot but they don’t know  everything and, usually, they’re the first ones to admit it. Certainly, mine did.

Our healthcare system has dramatically reduced the quality of medical care. Doctors spend too much of their very valuable time complying with insurance company mandates and doing paperwork rather than practicing the art and science of medicine which they love and have dedicated  their lives to.

We, as patients, must remain pro-active and do our homework in partnering with our doctors. With the state of our health care system in shambles and it failing us all, both doctors and patients need to work together as a team.

Please find an informed advocate to help you navigate the system, if possible, and, remember, nutrition is a science. Please discuss your nutritional needs with your physician and ask him or her about consulting with a nutritionist. Many insurance companies will pay for this care.

Question….do you get 15 minutes of sunlight every single day? If not, please ask your doctor for the blood test as soon as possible for you may be vitamin D deficient.
